Getting Started with ABCA
This is mainly to help new players but it may be useful for veterans as well. Simply put this is a guide that goes through how the league works and what to expect. The ABCA is a longtime FBB 3 basketball league with an active and entertaining group of GM’s. This guide is mainly a cutting and pasting of various existing pieces of information, with additional bits and pieces added along the way:
General Information
Website: abcabasketball.com/
Forums: abcabasketball.proboards.com/
Slack: ABCA.slack.com
Commish: Minnesota - JScott
New Members/Mentoring:
New Members (First time) to the league will be given a mentor from the committee to help them get accumulated to the league. These GM’s will also be under a trade moratorium for their first three sims in the league so they have time to learn the league a bit before making trades. For the duration of their first season, GMs may trade but must run their deals by their mentor before posting them.
The Rules (As found here: abca.proboards.com/thread/7/rules)
RULES: (Updated 2-12-14)
GM Activity and Expectations
1) Posting is a requirement. Know that inactivity will result in a new GM for your team.
2) You are required to post a depth chart update - either an actual update or "Same" - for each sim. This is essentially a GM check-in. DC updates must be in by noon CST on the day of the sim.
3) You are required to be present for the draft or send John a draft list, unless you have no picks in the current draft.
4) You are required to be present for free agency or send John a free agency list. If you choose not to pursue any players in free agency, you still must let John know.
5) New GMs are required to wait a minimum of 3 league sims before trading. They are welcomed to discuss trades before then but no trades can be made before the wait period.
6) GM Strikes: You may accrue three strikes per season. Strikes reset upon the last game of the ABCA Finals. If you receive your third strike, you are placed on GM probation for one full season - you lose your team, and you cannot be reinstated until the same time next season. (You will not lose your PP, and you can continue to participate in league discussions.)
Strikes can be accrued for the following non-exclusive items:
- Missing a depth chart (not posting in designated thread)
- Missing a FA bid
- Missing the draft
- Not having a full/valid roster
- Missing Training Camp (not posting in the designated thread)
- Obvious tanking (as determined by Commissioner and/or committee)
- Invalid/incorrect DC (as determined by Commissioner and/or committee)
- Inappropriate repeat offense trading/roster decisions (as determined by Commissioner and/or committee)
- Conduct detrimental to the league (as determined by Commissioner and/or committee)
NOTE: If you are going to be out of town, please let us know on the GM Absences board.
Community and Fairness
1) Respect is earned here, not given upon entering. Frankly, anyone starting out making strong moves will quickly get the respect they are due.
2) We do not tolerate any sort of hate speech here. Call people names/swear, sure, but lets steer clear of using racist or homophobic language on this board. You won't be the first or the last person run out of here because of that.
3) No TANKING or COLLUSION. You must play your best players. No giving away talented expiring for worse expiring, you must get something back of value, such as a pick or youth.
4) Smack talk is definitely tolerated and often times encouraged as feuds make for a fun league. If you cannot handle it, this is not the place for you.
Team Structure and Salary Rules
1) You must have a 1st Round draft pick at least every other year.
2) The Hard Cap is 135 Million. NO EXCEPTIONS. If you go over the Hard Cap via trade, consider the trade denied. If you go over based on an FA signing, the player will be cut. If you go over because of an increase in salaries from year to year, you will have until the live draft to get back under or you lose all rights to your picks and your best player to FA.
2a) Each team gets 5 million to spend on coaches. If you exceed this, the excess rounded up to the next million will be deducted from your hardcap. Ex. If you spend 5.2 million on coaches, you are over the coach cap and then lose 1 million from your players hard cap of 80 million, meaning you can only have up to 79 million in players salary. If you spend 7 mil on coaches, you would be docked 2 mil from the 80 and have only 78mil to work with.
3) ONE Free Agent may be signed PER TRADE to make a trade work. (NOTE: This does not mean one free agent per team involved, but for the entire trade itself). If one or more teams in the trade need to sign an FA to match caps the trade is DENIED.
4) Each team must keep a minimum of 12 players on their roster during the season.
5) DO NOT try and cheat the system. This is a broad rule that will be used to cover any sort of backhanded trading/upgrading/signing/anything that can happen. It include, but is not limited to the following:
- No CUT/TRADES. If you do not have a way to make it happen, you cannot make it happen. The same would be said for one deal that involves one player going back and forth between two teams.
- You cannot sign a FA cut by a team you dealt with (in the last 48 hours)for 48 hours after the player has been cut. This is to prevent capless talent swaps and to prevent people from trading useful filler that is to be cut and re-signed by original team.
Trading (http://abca.proboards.com/thread/10/post-trade-rules)
There are no exceptions to these rules. - Both teams must post the trade. [no copy/pasting]
- Both teams must type out their own trade, no copy/pastes.
- List the city or the team name of every pick in the trade.
- Each team must also post a reason for doing the trade. Why does it help your plans?
- You CANNOT make one trade and say to process it only if another trade is made. If you post a trade and the other guy agrees to it, that is a finished trade.
- Your trade WILL be denied if it doesn't match any of this criteria.
- The new game follows the NBA's new CBA for trade allowances.
